The Door Was the Portal: Feng Shui, Numerology & a Timely Shift
Sometimes the pressure builds so much that something has to give. For me, this summer, that “something” was my front door.
I had been feeling stuck. The energy in my home — and in myself — felt heavy. I was in the thick of launching summer camps, navigating family dynamics after my husband underwent emergency surgery, and trying to keep a creative business afloat in the middle of emotional exhaustion. Something had to change, or I was going to explode. So I did what any slightly unhinged creative might do: I painted my door.
But not just any color — and not just on a whim.
This was a carefully chosen shift using the energetic tools I trust most: feng shui, numerology, and cosmic timing. And I’m not exaggerating when I say: everything started to move.
The Power of a 9 Home: What Your Address Is Telling You
My house is a 9 home, meaning when you add up the digits of the street number, they reduce to 9. In numerology, 9 is the number of creativity, transformation, and emotional depth. It’s a number that asks us to complete old cycles, give generously, and create from the raw material of our lived experience. It’s perfect for artists, foster families, and anyone working through big emotional chapters (hi, that’s us).
But here’s the catch: 9 energy needs to be supported. It thrives when the home feels warm, meaningful, and emotionally aligned. My old yellow door? It just wasn’t cutting it anymore.
Feng Shui: Activating the Career Corner
In feng shui, the layout of your home aligns with nine areas of life, mapped in what’s called a bagua grid. The career and life path area is located at the front center of your home — meaning the front door is not just an entry point, but an energy portal.
According to feng shui principles, to strengthen the career area you should:
Use water colors (deep blue, black, bluish-green)
Incorporate flowing, curving shapes
Clear clutter and make the entrance inviting
The color I chose — Everglade Deck, a deep bluish-green — checks every box. It’s a water element shade that encourages flow, opportunities, and renewal. And since my door faces north, it also supports the career and life path area of the bagua.
Astrological Timing: Summer Solstice to New Moon in Cancer
The timing wasn’t random. I started painting on the Summer Solstice — the longest day of the year, and a natural energetic peak point. It felt like my inner pressure had reached its max, and I needed a ritual to release and redirect it.
The door was finished just before the New Moon in Cancer, the zodiac sign that rules home, intuition, and emotional security. This moon was a portal of rebirth — especially for anything connected to family and domestic life.
And here’s what happened:
As soon as the first coat went up, I signed a new client.
By the time the final coat dried, I had three more.
On the day of the new moon, I got a landed a new TV gig.
Coincidence? Maybe. But I’ve learned not to underestimate what happens when you take symbolic action with aligned intent.
Feeling Stuck? Shift the Space Around You
If you’re craving movement — in work, creativity, or life in general — don’t underestimate the power of your environment. Here’s how you can get started:
1. Find your home’s numerology:
Add the digits of your street address until you get a single digit (or a master number like 11 or 22).
Each number has its own energy — and once you know yours, you can decorate accordingly.
2. Look at your front door:
What color is it? What energy does it give off?
If it’s in your career zone (which most front doors are), colors like deep blue, black, or teal help activate that area.
3. Align with timing:
Start on a solstice, a new moon, or a personal milestone. Let it feel like a ritual.
Energy builds — and when it’s directed through action, things happen.
Final Thoughts
We don’t always need a total life overhaul. Sometimes we just need a brush, a bucket of paint, and a willingness to believe that space is never just space — it’s an extension of us.
And when we align our external world with our internal desires? The door doesn’t just open. It invites the next chapter in.
